The Waldorf High School (Waldorf Theoretical High School) became the first educational institution in Chisinau to join the NEXTGEN children's sports project. An open biathlon lesson, meetings with athletes took place here, and in a few days a biathlon section will start functioning, which will be the fourth in Moldova.

The NEXTGEN project was created on the initiative of the President of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova Dmitry Torner and is implemented in partnership with the International Biathlon Union IBU. The main goal of the project is to popularize biathlon among young people and to create an Olympic pool of Moldovan biathletes to participate in the 2028 Youth Olympics.

"In sport, time is measured in generations. Already now our junior team consists entirely of Moldovans. This year they represented Moldova at the Youth Olympic Games in Korea and have just returned from the World Championships in Estonia. But we are already thinking about who will be next. The NEXTGEN project was created for just that. For the first time we are opening biathlon sections and for the first time in Moldova we are using modern and safe IBU equipment for training: laser rifles and moving targets. This will make the training much more effective", said Dmitri Torner.

Currently, there are three children's biathlon sections in the Criuleni region

"A month ago, we organized a public biathlon lesson in Criuleni - the enthusiasm among children was so great that instead of one section in the regional center, we opened 3 biathlon sections in the region - in Criuleni, Izbiște and Rîșcova", said Dmitri Torner . He also announced the opening of the fifth biathlon section in another high school in Chisinau. In May competitions are planned between all the sections opened within the NEXTGEN project.

The Biathlon Federation notes that an important area of NEXTGEN will be the training of biathlon coaches, as there are not many in Moldova. At the moment there are opened sections where there are biathlon coaches: in the Criuleni region it is the Moldovan biathlete Alexandra Kamenschik, and at the Waldorf High School the section coach will be Andrei Dubchak, master of the sport in summer biathlon. In addition, the president of the Biathlon Federation, Dmitry Torner, believes that Moldova has the potential to develop other winter sports - skiing and luge. And he does not exclude that the NEXTGEN project will be expanded to create future champions and a new generation of Moldovan athletes not only in biathlon. The Biathlon Federation says that it is open to cooperation with authorities, parents' committees and teachers to implement the project on the basis of sports and secondary schools, sports complexes and youth centers across the country.

The NEXTGEN project is designed to popularize biathlon among children and young people and is one of the directions of TornerSportsInitiative - a series of initiatives of the President of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova, Dmitry Torner. More information about the project:
